What are your opinions about the symbol for disability access?

January 25th, 2011

The international symbol for access (disability access) shows a white wheelchair on blue background. It‘s used to symbolize disability access, such as disability accessible parking spaces, parking permissions for those spaces, accessible transport vehicles, accessible bathrooms, buttons for automatic doors etc. It is also sometimes used to symbolize people with disabilities.

I’m interested in your opinions about this symbol and how it represents disabilities and disability access.

Do you feel that this symbol is a good symbol for disability access?

Do you feel that this symbol represents access for people with all kinds of disabilities or only for wheelchair users?

Do you think it‘s clear who the disability access is intended for or do you feel that the symbol may be misunderstood sometimes?

Do you think that the symbol affects people‘s awareness or ideas about various types of disabilities?

Do you think some other symbol would be better to represent all people with disabilities?

Does anyone know of a way to rent mobility aids?

November 9th, 2010

Both myself and my roommate while we can walk some any small distance is a huge challenge. My roommate has severe hip arthritis – so even walking around Walmart is a huge effort. I have fatigue issues that stem from a neurological disorder. I normally would not use a wheelchair – but to go to a museum or other tourist places that do not provide mobility aids, but require a lot of walking it would be nice to be able to rent some sort of assistive devise. Anyone know where I could get something – keep in mind that I only have a car to transport it, not a van or SUV. I’ve tried the seat canes and they really don’t work very well for me. Any ideas anyone?

I need an advice me. Please help me?

There was an elderly couple in our neighborhood. As their son rarely visited them, they quite lonely until our family moved next to their house. Despite of the age difference of my parents to them, we’ve become good friends. I, as kid often come to the Lims house, the elderly couple and watch television with the couple.

After Mrs. Lim passed away, the Lim’s house was registered in the sole name of Mr. Lim. He became more reliant on our family particularly to me considering that I am now a teenager. I used to do his shopping for him and help with the cleaning and other odd jobs around the house. Mr. Lim often said to me, "You are like a dauther to me. I will make sure you are all right."

As I became 18, I told Mr Lim that I had been offered a place to study a Harvard. My parents were going to take out a second mortgage on our house to finance my studies. Mr Lim said, I don’t know how will I manage without you. If you are prepared to live at home and study at a local university, I will pay all the tuition fees and give you a regular allowance to buy books and pay for transport etc." I decided to accept Mr. Lim’s offer.

I obtained a place to study to a local university. I am very grateful to Mr. Lim for his support and I even spent more time that previously helping him around the house. I continued to do his shopping regularly and cooked all his meals. Mr. Lim’s health deteriorated gradually during this period and he became disabled. I would take him out in his wheelchair, so that he could get some fresh air every day. I would also take him on his regular visits to the doctor and to the community centre where he would chat with his old friends. Mr Lim said to Susan on several occasions, "My son never visits me. You are like a daughter to me. I don’t know how I would manage without you. One day this house will be yours."

Mr Lim died recently. In his will he left his entire state to his son. Please help me.

How to politely avoid a hug and/or a handshake?

October 18th, 2010

I volunteer at a hospital in the ER, and part of what I do is ask families if they need anything, then run around and get patients and their families warm blankets, and pillows, entertain young children and distract the families, and give them updates on the patients status, and then I take a wheelchair and transport them out.

Because I interact families so often, and do so much for them, many people give me hugs and I’ve had occasions where I’ve been kissed on the cheek when I am saying goodbye and helping patients leave.

I know it’s because they are thankful, and I’m not BOTHERED by it, because I am a very huggy person too, so that’s not the problem.

It’s just that I interact with a lot of sick patients, and I don’t want to have any germs in direct contact with me, and for their sake, because after interacting with sick patients, I don’t want to get anything on THEM either.

Is there anyway to politely avoid a hug and/or a handshake?

Thanks

Wheelchair'd into X-ray for a cut finger?

October 10th, 2010

Last month, when I was at my computer, a large glass bird figurine fell on my hand, putting a deep gash down my pinkie finger.

I went to the ER to have it treated, they wanted to give me a tetanus shot, asked me all sorts of questions, and all of that. However, when they said they were going to need an x-ray of it to make sure there was no glass in there (that’s not the weird part!) they transported me to the x-ray room via wheelchair.

I didn’t have any other injuries, and I was walking fine, and I sure didn’t lose that much blood (for a badly cut finger). For some reason, it kind of stuck with me. Is that normal for hospitals to do? Obviously, I don’t go too often!

Should we adapt society to cater for fat people? Or Should fat people be ostracized until they lose weight?

October 5th, 2010

By ostracized, I don’t mean completely!

Examples include seats in cinemas and on planes. Should people too fat not be allowed to to use these simply because they’re obese or should we adapt our society to accommodate the obese citizens?

Other examples of things that need adapting (some of which we do already!) include;
Wheelchairs, trolleys, beds, rooms and toilets in hospitals.
Rides at theme parks
Childrens play areas, Schools
Public transport (bus, taxi)
Shops Etc, use your imagination!

Alternatively we could boycot high fat foods…

Can I take household items into Mexico?

October 3rd, 2010

I plan to pull a small trailer on my trip to Mexico. Since I have room to spare, family members have already asked me if I can transport something for them. They include a new washer, used motorized wheelchair, and a used christmas tree. Do you know if I have to pay a taxes on these items? Should I risk going through the Nothing to Declare line at the border crossing? I don’t mine doing favors but it would really suck if I have to have pay. Any tips would greatly be appreciated.

About embezzlement from an officer…?

May 23rd, 2010

Let’s say, hypotetically, that a high ranking officer is involved in the embezzlement of money, from goods that should be transported to a combat zone–such as whellchairs! For whatever reason, this person was responsible and may or may not be involved in the embezzlement of money from the possible sale of these chairs. The person just retired from the reserve component, and was in an active duty setting at that time. Besides possibly loosing the retirement benefits, which is obvious, if this person is proven to be involved directly, could they face jail time in a federal prison? How long? I wish they do, because there is no reason for a high ranking officer to profit from the pain of others; wheelchairs for crying out loud!!!

In the UK are there any mobility scooters that can be transported in a car standing without disassembling?

May 19th, 2010

i am trying to help my disabled mother find a mobility scooter that can be driven in the back of a car without the need to take off the battery or fold it. That perhaps could be driven in with a ramp at the rear of the car. She has limited mobility and is not able to use a wheelchair or electric wheelchair. Your help would be so much appreciated if not life changing as it means my mother would finally gain her independence. If you could point me in the direction as to finding a car model and the model of the scooter and would i need to have it road saftey checked? thank you in advance x

New Daughter in the NICU?

May 15th, 2010

I had my daughter on Friday January 16th at 1:00PM by C-section. Her name is Haley Grace and she was 3 weeks early. I went an OB appt. and found out I was leaking fluid. Anyway she seemed so perfect and healthy when she was born, but around 9 PM that night they discovered she wasn’t getting enough oxygen and had to be transported to a bigger hospital with a better NICU. My doctor released me from the hospital on Saturday, less than 24 hours after my c-section. (He had many reservations, but was understanding that I wanted to be with my daughter.) I spent all of yesterday by her bedside in the NICU. She can’t be fed and has a tube giving her oxygen through her nose. She weighs 5 lbs 7 oz.

So my question is for other moms who have had a baby in the NICU… How did you do it? The NICU is one hour away from my house and I already have a 2 1/2 year old son. I am so torn on where I need to be and how often. To add to that I am in an extreme amount of pain from the c-section and have to be in a wheelchair whenever I am at the hospital.(Part of the deal with my doctor) My daughter will be there at least this entire week. I want to be with her so much, but I miss my son so much too. He has been with his grandparents and see him here and there at the hospital, but I can’t help but feel guilty for leaving him so much. I am a SAHM so he and I are together 24/7 normally. How did you divide your time? Also how did you deal with all of the emotions? I find myself crying and just overwhelmed and stressed so much. Everything has happened so fast and the hormones don’t help.

I have a lowered/ dropped down curb out side my property which has been put there for disabled people to cross?

May 14th, 2010

the road, it is not for access to a driveway etc. We have a school opposite us and the sixth formers all park their vehicles outside our property which is bad enough not being able to find a parking space outside your own home… The people who live around me are mostly 60+ so there for have wheelchairs and mobility scooters it is very unfair to them that the route they need to cross the road for shops, transport etc is blocked by these children. I know that if the pavement is lowered for a driveway it is not to be parked over… would the same rules apply for my lowered pavement… If so what can I do about getting this sorted I have rang the school and spoke to the head and I have also left notes on the pupils cars with no success. I hate to sound like a moody older person to these youngsters but it is not fair that they are making life harder for the disabled around me.

Many Thanks

Please I need some help with this problem, what would do you suggest me?

May 11th, 2010

My problem is this, 3 weeks ago, we were in a family reunion and things went very bad, the kids were transported in a car and had and accident, my son(8-year-old) was the most affected, he broke both his legs, he broke his left ankle in three places and his right tibia and fibula, and some other injuries in his body, he had some surgeries and stuff like that, we are finally home. I want to make a sort of welcome-party for my son, he´s wheelchair bound and his doctor recommended him to be in his bed the next two months, do you think the party is a good idea? If so, can you give me some ideas or advice about the party? We want to make something entertained for my son, considering his situation. I need help with this, please answer. Thanks in advance.

I had a dream years ago that i need interpreted…?

May 9th, 2010

i had a dream where me, and this fairy girl were in hawaii. and we were on a beach with lots of people. then we saw in the distance this HUGE TIDAL WAVE!
and so everyone ran exept me, the fairy and this man with no legs in a wheelchair. so we helped him and ran into a cave on the other side of the island. and we had to defeat this BIG SPIDER in the deepest part of the cave. right before we got to it, we were transported to Hobbiton, only is was moderns! anyway, we met Frodo there, and he was a rapper. and he wasn’t short. anyway, we talked him into helping us kill the spider, and he agreed then we were teleported there, and he did all the fighting. me and the old legless guy just watches. the fairy girl was there, but not there. it was weird, anyway, frodo killed it then we were teleported back to hobbiton, only it was not modern anymore. it was a fishing town by the see with lots of fish everywhere and piers. and he went home to his boyfriend Sam, and then we were teleported back to hawaii and the tidal wave was JUST about to hit, when it disppeared and everyone came back. we said goodbye to the old legless guy and then i woke up…

Select one these theories that has the highest degree of "explanatory function" and the one that has the highest degree of "predictive function" for a Virtual Work Team It has to be 150 words.

The theories are:
1. Social Exchange Theory
2. Systems Theory
3. Symbolic Convergence Theory
4. Structuration Theory
5. Functional Theory

Select again a theory that has the highest degree of "explanatory function" and one that has the greatest degree of predictive function" for Pizza club scenario. It also have to be 150 words.
Scenario: Pizza Club

Several students started meeting on Friday nights at a nearby pizza parlor. It was fun to unwind and share work and family stories, and discuss their courses and the state’s winning sports team. They started referring to the group as the Pizza Club. While the meetings were informal, and the number of students who showed up on any given Friday would vary, there was a core group that seldom missed a week.

One of the members, Greg, came semi-regularly. Sometimes he and his wife would get a babysitter so they could have a night out without kids. One week the group was informed that Greg had been in a serious accident. As weeks progressed, various members of the Pizza Club would take turns visiting him at the hospital. Eventually he was moved to a rehabilitation center. The Pizza Club would occasionally take a pizza to the center and spend the evening with Greg and his wife.

One week when the Pizza Club arrived for their visit, Greg’s wife was upset. She said that that Greg was going to have to leave the center because his insurance would no longer cover his treatment at the rehabilitation center. She detailed Greg’s daily therapy routine, the challenges of transporting him to the doctor, and even just moving him from room to room. She pointed out that he really could not be left alone for long periods.

Without consulting the other members, Jane said, “The Pizza Club will help!” The next week she called all the members and they met to discuss what they could do. Another member, Alex, was a project manager, so he began to chart the ways that each person could help. Within a short time, they had six members who had agreed to learn how to do the required therapy. Three men who lived close by volunteered to be on call and would help with some of Greg’s personal needs. One man donated a wheelchair that had belonged to his father. Others volunteered to help with the trips to the doctor. They even had members who volunteered to take care of Greg’s two kids and help with shopping. Within a few hours, the plan was completed. They then took a pizza over to Greg and his wife to celebrate his homecoming and to share their plan.

Some of the members could not or did not choose to participate, and they seemed to come less often to the Friday Pizza Club. However, the people helping with Greg attended more regularly than ever.

In time, Greg fully recovered and became one of the most regular attendees. He often organized birthday or anniversary celebrations for other members of the club.

What would you say to this lady…..?

May 5th, 2010

I am driving through the parking lot at Walmart looking for a handicap parking spot. Of course they are all taken with the exception of one. I go to pull in and this lady in a van cuts me off and takes the spot. So I decide to just park in a spot further away. After getting my son and his wheelchair out of a tight spot because the cars are parked so close, I begin to walk to the entrance. When I come to the van of the lady who cut me off, I see her and three other perfectly abled bodied people getting out and walking towards the same entrance as me. Does anybody else think that it is too easy to get a handicap parking tag? And is it rude to use one if you yourself are not disabled and are not transporting the person of whom the tag was designated? This really rubbed me the wrong way. I never park in a handicap spot if my son is not with me.
no lie….i saw a motorcycle with a handicap plate. can u get a tag for other than physical disabilities? i do not know why it took them so long, but they sure seemed to ambulate well.
lol reverend
i will add that it was a wheelchair van accessible spot. is this somehow different? do u have to have a wheelchair in order to use this spot or not?
